Zak’s double and Roo’s top-corner finish helped High Lane Athletico turn a half-time deficit into a hard-earned win over New Mills.
High Lane Athletico produced an excellent second-half response to beat New Mills, turning the game around with sharper pressing, better use of the wide areas and three well-taken goals. Zak scored twice and Roo smashed home a set piece, but the biggest encouragement was how the boys listened at half-time and put the discussion into practice.
Athletico had controlled possession for much of the first half without finding the final ball or finish to make it count. There was plenty of work on the ball, but New Mills carried the counter-attacking threat the coaches had anticipated. They made it tell, leaving Athletico a goal down at the break and with a challenge to answer.
The half-time message was clear: be more aggressive without the ball, press higher and force New Mills backwards. A couple of positional changes also gave Athletico more attacking threat out wide, with Felix and Mason providing the defensive structure behind the front four. The aim was to turn possession into more meaningful pressure.
The response was immediate. Athletico raised the intensity, pressed quickly and moved the ball into the wide areas with greater purpose. The equaliser captured the change perfectly: Harry whipped a brilliant low cross into the box and Zak finished to draw level. This time, the final ball and finish were exactly what was needed.
Athletico kept the pressure on and created more chances before a brilliantly worked set piece brought the lead. Roo supplied the emphatic finish, smashing the ball into the top corner. With momentum on their side, the boys continued to move the ball patiently and search for openings in behind, before Zak struck powerfully for his second goal to increase the lead.
New Mills pulled one back late on to leave a nervy finish, but Athletico showed the character to see out the game. Mason was a thoroughly deserving Man of the Match, outstanding throughout with his calmness on the ball, composure and organisation in the defensive line. His contribution helped give those further forward the platform to take control after the break.
Alongside the satisfaction of the win, this was an encouraging example of a young team learning and adapting together. The boys did more than hear the half-time advice: they took responsibility for changing the game. For Athletico and everyone at High Lane, that is a real positive to carry into the next match, with the challenge now to bring that same intensity and purpose from the start.
